Isla Margarita - Reliable Winds
Located just 20 miles off South America’s northern coast, is the Venezuelan Island of Margarita.
From the Porlamar airport, a short 10 minute drive will bring you to El Yaque Beach, a
small fishing village discovered by windsurfers 10 years ago for its great sailing conditions.
Margarita Island is 360 square miles with about 100 miles of coast. The capital Porlamar is
a bustling city with an eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, bars and dance clubs.
Arid, desert-like conditions exist in the southern area of Margarita including El Yaque where
you will see cacti amid beachfront palm trees. The island interior will hold surprises
including a rain forest, mangrove sanctuaries and breathtaking mountaintops. Quaint coastal
cities, colonial plazas, church and forts offer interesting diversions for daytime exploration.
There are two National Parks and three Natural Monuments on the island. You’ll be enchanted
with La Restinga lagoon, a National Park with an extension of 26,439 acres, the biggest
one on the island that has a lagoon of 18 square miles with beautiful canals and mangroves.
Margarita is only 9 degrees from the equator. Daytime air temperature averages 85 – 90 degrees
and water temperature is typically in the low 80’s. You will notice very little variation in
climate between summer and winter.
Spanish is the official language of Margarita although English is commonly spoken in the tourist
areas. Currency is the Venezuelan bolivar. You will need a valid passport for entry to
Margarita and you need to be sure that it does not have an expiration date within 6 months of
your travel dates.
